The iPhone OS, now the IOS is an operating system developed by Apple. Exclusively, for iDevices.
In 2007, Apple extended their device range namely, ipod touch, ipad, ipad mini and second generation apple television. From June 2014, apple’s app store consisted of more than 1.2 million IOS applications and have been downloaded more than 60 billion times. It had a 21% share of the smartphone mobile operating system units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2012, behind Google’s Android.
By the middle of 2012, there were 410 million devices activated. According to the special media event held by Apple on September 12, 2012, 400 million devices had been sold by June 2012
IOS’ user interface has the ‘touch’ concept, sliders, switches, and buttons, pinching and tapping. This operating system uses a multi touch gesture which is direct manipulation.
IOS shares framework like Core Foundation and Foundation with OS X, but IOS uses Cocoa Touch toolkit, instead of OS X’s Cocoa, therefore it provides the UIKit framework instead of AppKit. So this is why it isn’t compatible with the OS X for applications. Unix-like shekk access is not available for users and restricted for apps, making IOS not fully Unix compatible either.
Given a minor setback, IOS is still a major OS. IOS seems to be taking the lead in sales for the past 5 years.
